Yankees Secure Victory Against Cardinals
St. Louis – A couple of hours before the game on Friday, Brian Cashman set a clear goal for his team for the remaining section of the season.
“We need to win,” the Yankees’ general manager stated. “We have to focus on winning tonight’s game and take it one game at a time. After achieving that, we need to come together as a team.”
For at least one night, they succeeded, although it was a bit of a struggle. The Yankees had been facing challenges recently, but Friday’s game offered a fresh opportunity.
The Yankees quickly took the lead, with Lewis Gill and the bullpen helping them secure a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at the hot and humid Busch Stadium.
Having won three of their last four games, the Yankees (65-57) managed to keep pace in the division race, now standing 6½ games behind the Blue Jays, which added some relief in their pursuit of the final AL wildcard spot.
Building a 4-0 lead by the third inning, the Yankees held on to dodge a challenge from the struggling Cardinals (61-62). Luke Weaver and David Bednar closed out the game with the final seven outs in a close contest. Bednar notched his second save in four attempts since joining the team at the trade deadline.
Despite a 3-for-17 performance with runners in scoring position, the Yankees struggled to breathe more life into their offense late in the game.
Gill, who allowed only one run in 5¹/₃ innings, benefited from three inning-ending double plays in the first three frames, helping him avoid significant trouble while managing his pitch count. Two of those double plays were started by first baseman Cody Bellinger, who handled his responsibilities effectively.
In the fifth inning, Gill encountered a jam with runners on second and third with no outs. However, he managed to escape unscathed, partly thanks to a strikeout that came on a blazing 99 mph fastball.
The Cardinals finally made a dent in the scoreboard, closing in at 4-1, prompting Aaron Boone to bring in Mark Writer Jr.
Camilo Doval entered the seventh, notching a quick strikeout but also allowing a walk. He then served a 1-2 pitch that Pedro Pages hit, narrowing the gap to 4-2 with an RBI double.
Boone turned to Luke Weaver next, who was challenged early by Lars Nootbaar, allowing the page to sneak in and reduce the Yankees’ lead to 4-3.
The Yankees started strong with a 3-0 lead against Cardinals’ right-hander Andre Palante before Gill even took the mound. Trent Grisham opened the game with a walk, followed by Ben Rice’s double. Aaron Judge then drove Grisham in from third.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. made his mark with a two-run homer that contributed to the score. Chisholm walked, advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, and added to the total with a two-out single from Jasson Dominguez, pushing the game to 4-0.
