Yankees Season Recap and Playoff Outlook
This season, the Yankees offered the Rays a home venue, but it seems the $15 million they paid was all they were willing to contribute to the Yankees’ cause.
Even though the Yankees ended the regular season with an impressive eight-game winning streak, it was still not enough to reclaim the top spot in the AL East. The Blue Jays outperformed them, clinching the season series at 8-5.
The season finale arrived on Game 162, where the Yankees edged out the Orioles 3-2, bolstered by two home runs from Ben Rice. Unfortunately for the Yankees, the Blue Jays completed a sweep of the Rays.
Looking ahead, the Yankees will face off against the Red Sox in the Bronx on Tuesday for the wild card series, while the Blue Jays sit back and prepare for the ALDS.
Interestingly, player Alejandro Kirk has caused plenty of issues for the Yankees, even when he wasn’t directly facing them.
During the final game, Rice broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning, making a significant impact just when the Yankees needed it.
The Yankees finished the regular season with an identical record of 94-68 as the Blue Jays, leaving fans pondering the missed opportunities throughout the season.
It’s worth considering how many games they let slip by, especially during a rough summer stretch, which could have made a difference in the division standings.
But now, with the playoffs beginning soon, they don’t have much time to reflect. They’ll have to gear up quickly against a divisional foe that has given them trouble all year.
While the Red Sox took the season series at 9-4, the Yankees did manage to win two out of three during their most recent meeting.
Though the Yankees didn’t claim the division title, Aaron Judge wrapped up his season on a high note, finishing with a batting average of .331 and hitting 53 home runs—making it his third AL MVP campaign.
Early in the day, the Rays led the Blue Jays 1-0, and shortly after, the Yankees found themselves down 1-0 when Kyle Bradish gave up a home run.
The Yankees’ hopes started to deflate as the Blue Jays quickly tied the game and surged to a 5-1 advantage with a grand slam from Kirk.
In the fourth inning, Lewis Gill of the Yankees allowed consecutive home runs to Jordan Westberg and Gunnar Henderson, putting the Orioles ahead 2-1.
Meanwhile, as the Rays pulled ahead 5-4, the Yankees squandered a big opportunity to reclaim the lead during a critical fourth inning.
Judge, along with Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton, opened the inning with singles, tying the game at two. However, the rally fizzled out as Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe, and Ryan McMahon failed to capitalize.
The Yankees tried again in the fifth, with Jose Caballero stealing his second base of the season, but soon, Rice found himself stranded with no runs to show for it.
When Rice finally crossed home in the eighth inning, the Blue Jays had already taken control, pulling further away and making it a rough day for the Yankees.
