TAMPA — Injury Updates for the Yankees
Wednesday brought some disappointing news from Aaron Boone and the Yankees, as coaches from Florida and Arizona reported new injuries at the start of camp.
As pitchers, catchers, and other players involved in the World Baseball Classic began arriving for spring training at George M. Steinbrenner Field, Boone mentioned that the team was relatively healthy—aside from four players already on injured reserve: Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Clark Schmidt, and Anthony Volpe.
Even though there’s still some time until Opening Day, it seems like the Yankees are starting off on a decent note, which hasn’t always been the case in previous seasons.
“I think we’re in a pretty good position,” Boone remarked.
On the recovery front, Cole and Rodon were seen playing catch together on the backfield Wednesday as they continue their rehabilitation from elbow surgeries.
According to Boone, Rodon, who had a bone spur and some loose material removed from his left elbow last October, is “probably not too far behind schedule” for the season and might make it back by late April.
Meanwhile, Cole has been back home for several bullpen sessions since his Tommy John surgery about 11 months ago. Boone expressed optimism that Cole could start facing hitters soon, potentially even playing in an exhibition game before the camp wraps up.
While the Yankees aren’t rushing Cole, the fact he might pitch in a game by late spring could be reassuring for his recovery, with hopes for a return by May or June.
Regarding Volpe, who had surgery on his left shoulder last October due to a torn labrum, he’s expected to start hitting in about two weeks—this would mark a significant step in his rehabilitation process.
“He’s doing well,” Boone said. “The focus is on building strength in the weight room, and he’s made great progress. His range of motion is incredible.”
