George Lombard Jr. is moving up from Hudson Valley quite quickly.
This promotion to Double-A Somerset was confirmed on Sunday, following an impressive run in 24 games at High A Hudson Valley, where he really excelled.
It was first reported by ESPN.
The 19-year-old infielder made a strong impression during his initial big league camp experience this spring. At Hudson Valley, he got off to a remarkable start, hitting .329 with an OPS of .983 and stealing 11 bases.
He managed 23 walks compared to 22 strikeouts across 111 plate appearances, and had already appeared in 29 games at High-A at the tail end of last season after playing in Single A Tampa.
Lombard was the Yankees’ first-round pick in 2023, primarily playing shortstop throughout his minor league career, but he’s also had time at third and second base.
As the son of George Lombard, a former player and current bench coach for the Tigers, Lombard Jr. has been recognized for his maturity and skill level at such a young age.
