‘Yeah,’ Americans Are Economically Better Off than Four Years Ago

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), a 2024 Democratic vice presidential candidate, said in an interview with Michigan's Fox 17 WXMI on Friday that Americans are better off economically than they were four years ago.

“At Tuesday's debate, the first question for the vice president was whether Americans are better off than they were four years ago when it comes to the economy. She didn't necessarily answer that question directly, but I want to give you a chance. How would you respond?” Fox 17 special projects and investigative producer Eileen Gould asked.

Walz responded, “Well, yes, certainly, an economy that works for the middle class. Donald Trump certainly promised his rich friends at Mar-a-Lago that he'd cut their taxes because you're super rich. And he did. He's devastated the middle class. He's made it harder. He's put even more burdens on middle-class people. He has no plan for things like child care and an economy that's important to people. And the thing is, as a governor who understood that as we came out of a COVID pandemic that Donald Trump so badly mismanaged, we had to rebuild. And that's exactly what she's done, and now we have a new path forward. This certainly gives Michigan voters an opportunity to see their ideas reflected in these policies, not just the very few at the top. The idea of homeownership, as I said, for many of us, [so] At our core, to Wall Street, we're just a commodity to be traded. And I think Donald Trump is for those guys, and Kamala Harris is for the people right in the middle, who work an honest day and deserve to be paid an honest day's pay.”
