The U.S. Treasury Department mistakenly imposed sanctions on an Israeli man who has no connection to the protest movement that President Joe Biden’s administration is targeting at the behest of radical anti-Israel groups.
As Breitbart News reported last month, the Biden administration announced new sanctions against Israeli civilians who have not been charged with any crime, this time against a group called “Tsav 9” that protests humanitarian aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip. Tsav 9 argues that the humanitarian aid strengthens Hamas terrorists who steal the supplies, and that little to no aid is reaching the dozens of Israeli hostages still being held.
Breitbart News reported:
The Biden administration has already imposed sanctions on Israel for “extremist settler violence” targeting individuals who have not been convicted of any crime, while giving billions of dollars in sanctions relief to terrorist-supporting Iran.
…
The protests have not disrupted aid to Gaza, with Israeli officials saying enough aid reaches the area every day to feed its entire population. A recent poll of Palestinians found that 64% could get enough food for one or two days.
…
The new sanctions will be met with alarm in Israel because Tsav 9 is widely seen as a peaceful movement with significant public support, and its only act of violence has been the dumping of supplies from aid trucks onto the road.
Last week, the Treasury Department expanded sanctions against Tsav IX, but the sanctions were targeted incorrectly and his personal and financial life was thrown into turmoil for no reason. The Times of Israel report on monday:
Shortly after the U.S. announcement, it emerged that the Treasury Department had confused Sarid with an unrelated Israeli, Aviad Shlomo Sarid, and had listed the latter’s ID number and date of birth rather than that of Sarid, who heads Tzav 9.
Abiad Shlomo Sarid, of Levava in the West Bank, had his bank account and credit cards frozen even though his name was mistakenly blacklisted.
…
Sarid stepped up his efforts in comments to the Israeli daily Hayom, saying he and his group would “do everything in our power to change the Hamas-backed policies that harm our soldiers until all the hostages are returned.”
As Breitbart News noted, many of the sanctions were prompted by complaints from Democracy for the Arab World (DAWN), an anti-Israel group founded by the late author Jamal Khashoggi.
The sanctions amount to an unprecedented intervention in Israeli domestic politics, treating peaceful protests as if they were a violent terrorist organization and suppressing views that the Biden administration dislikes.
