Yemeni officials have accused the United States of repeatedly ignoring warnings about the threat the Houthi rebels could pose to international trade.

Maj. Gen. Aidars al-Zubaidi, vice president of Yemen's UN-recognized government, said he had raised his concerns with U.S. and British officials at the U.N. General Assembly in September.

“They wrote everything down,” Al-Zubaidi said this weekend at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “They did nothing.”

Specifically, al-Zubaidi said he warned that at the time the Houthis were regrouping and rearming and could carry out large-scale operations.

The US military has been struggling for months to respond to Houthi attacks on international trading vessels in the Red Sea. Houthi missiles have targeted numerous vessels, including those owned by US, Israeli and British companies.

Small Houthi boats also attempted to hijack several ships.
