Changes in North Carolina’s Political Landscape

Things have begun to shift in North Carolina.

Rep. Nassif Majeed, a lawmaker from Mecklenburg County, has officially parted ways with the Democratic Party. This comes shortly after state Rep. Carla Cunningham changed her voter registration to “independent.”

On Monday, Majeed verified his decision. He stated, “After much contemplation and discussions with the constituents of the 99th District, I have decided to leave the Democratic Party and serve as an independent.” He added, “This choice is grounded in my duty to represent the people rather than the interests of a political party; I want to uphold integrity, fairness, and truth.”

“I have seen actions within the political sphere that may be seen as misleading or do not align with the essence of fair elections. I can’t, in good faith, associate with circumstances where these issues are not sufficiently addressed,” he explained.

Similar to Cunningham, Majeed is viewed as a more conservative Democrat. Both have supported measures that override vetoes from Democratic Governor Josh Stein, such as those concerning the Criminal Illegal Alien Control Act and the Illegal Alien Control Act. Both veto overrides succeeded, and the legislation is now law in North Carolina, though it faced criticism from LGBTQ+ activists for recognizing only two genders.

Both Majeed and Cunningham experienced defeat in their reelection bids last month during the Democratic primary. Challenger Valeria Levi won with 69% of the vote, while Majeed received merely 26%.

Majeed has represented District 99 since 2019, while Cunningham has held the District 106 seat since 2013. They will finish out their terms but won’t be able to compete as independents in the upcoming November elections.

Democratic House Leader Robert Reeves commented on the situation, indicating no animosity towards the departing members. He stated, “Representatives Majeed and Cunningham have consistently voted in alignment with their values throughout their public service, and I trust they will continue to do so.” He also expressed his appreciation for their friendship and looked forward to their ongoing collaboration.
