Yomiuri Giants Manager Arrested for Alleged Assault
Shinnosuke Abe, the manager of the Yomiuri Giants, was taken into custody on Monday on suspicion of assaulting his 18-year-old daughter during a domestic dispute in Tokyo.
Abe, who is 47, reportedly lost his temper while trying to mediate an argument between his two teenage daughters. It’s said that he grabbed one of them and “pushed her to the floor.”
In a surprising turn, Abe’s wife, along with his two daughters, was present during the altercation at their home in Shibuya Ward. According to eyewitness accounts, he expressed frustration to a police officer at the scene, indicating that he was trying to diffuse the situation but became enraged when his daughter spoke back.
The Metropolitan Police Department performed a breathalyzer test on Abe before releasing him shortly after his arrest, although he was promptly taken back into custody.
The CEO of the Giants, Toru Kunimatsu, made a public statement regarding the incident, labeling it as “unacceptable.” He expressed that violence is serious and emphasized that the team would be looking into disciplinary action against Abe, including the possibility of his removal. Effective immediately, chief offensive coach Hideki Hashigami is stepping up as acting manager for the team’s upcoming games.
The Giants are set to play a series of exchange games against the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks starting Tuesday. This could really impact team dynamics, especially given the timing with the new interleague season approaching.
Abe has had a remarkable career, previously playing for the Giants for nearly two decades, during which he hit 406 home runs and collected 1,285 RBIs. He even won the Central League MVP in 2012. But now, his managerial tenure is clouded by this incident.
His record with the Giants, notably leading them to a Central League championship in 2024, now faces scrutiny amidst these troubling allegations.
