A Lyft driver in Kentucky is facing serious allegations of sexually assaulting a female passenger during a ride to a doctor’s appointment. Yordan Diaz-Vera, 34, from Louisville, has been charged with first-degree sodomy, menacing, and kidnapping, as indicated in local police records.
In addition to the criminal charges, Diaz-Vera is reportedly in U.S. immigration custody, which suggests that federal authorities may be preparing for his deportation. However, the Department of Homeland Security has not confirmed details regarding his immigration status.
The incident occurred on February 4 when the victim used a Lyft service arranged by her doctor’s office. After picking her up, Diaz-Vera allegedly revealed a gun from the glove compartment, which no doubt escalated the situation. Police reports detail that he stopped the car, moved to the back seat, and forced the victim to comply with his demands. Despite her attempts to flee, she found the doors locked.
After being taken to the hospital, the victim was able to contact the police. Authorities from the Louisville Metro Police Department stated there is currently “no evidence” suggesting that this incident is part of a broader pattern of similar offenses.
In the wake of the allegations, Lyft has removed Diaz-Vera from their platform and is cooperating fully with authorities as they conduct their investigation. A representative from Lyft condemned the actions, stating that such behavior has no place in their community or in society at large. The company assures that all drivers are required to pass specific background checks to operate on their platform.
Authorities praised the quick response of the police department’s specialized unit, hoping that this case will encourage other victims to step forward and report any incidents.
