Dodgers Claim Second Consecutive World Series Title
The Dodgers seemed on track for back-to-back championships, and they confirmed that with a thrilling win late Saturday night.
In a tense World Series matchup at Rogers Center, early Sunday morning, Yoshinobu Yamamoto grounded Alejandro Kirk into a double play during the bottom of the 11th inning, securing a 5-4 victory for the Dodgers. Another dramatic night unfolded with extra innings.
Will Smith propelled the Dodgers ahead with a solo home run into the left field seats in the top of the 11th, pushing the score to 5-4. Yamamoto then took the mound with the task of preserving that lead, which he managed to do successfully.
This win marked the Dodgers as the first team to achieve consecutive championships since the Yankees back in 2000.
Notably, this was only the third Game 7 in MLB history to extend beyond 11 innings.
The journey to victory was anything but straightforward.
The Blue Jays had a strong grip on the game as they entered the bottom of the ninth, with the score tied at four. Toronto’s Dalton Varsho grounded out while the bases were loaded, leading to an out, and Isaiah Kiner-Falefa was tagged out at home. Ernie Clement followed up with a fly ball to centerfield, caught by Andy Pages, pushing the game into extra innings.
Faced with potential disaster in the World Series, Miguel Rojas delivered a pivotal solo home run off Blue Jays pitcher Jeff Hoffman, leveling the score in the top of the ninth.
Toronto initially surged ahead in the third inning, taking a 3-0 lead thanks to a three-run homer from Ohtani off Bo Bichette, but he exited the game shortly after. Ohtani’s performance only lasted 2/3 of an inning, during which he recorded three strikeouts, issued two walks, and allowed three earned runs.
This Game 7 marked the first heated encounter since 2019, with a bench-clearing ejection occurring in the fourth inning.
