The parents of Austin Metcalf released a heartfelt statement following the recent guilty verdict against Carmelo Anthony. After Anthony received a 35-year prison sentence for Austin’s murder, the victim’s parents addressed him directly in court.
Meghan Metcalf, Austin’s mother, shared her grief with Anthony, who briefly lifted his head from the table. Holding back tears, she described the deep and lasting impact her son’s death has had on their family. “We never know what our future holds,” she said, capturing the uncertainty they now feel.
In the courtroom, both Meghan and her husband, Jeff, appeared visibly affected as she expressed, “My house is quiet right now,” mourning the silence that now envelops their home. She conveyed her wish that this whole tragedy was just a bad dream.
Meghan also voiced her frustration over the media coverage surrounding the incident. “For journalists and activists, this is a story. For our family, this is reality,” she said. All her conversations with her son, she added, now take place at his gravesite, and as she spoke, she made direct eye contact with Anthony.
“He didn’t just die,” Meghan emphasized. “He was taken from us.” Turning her focus directly to Anthony, she said, “I was sentenced to life without my son, so I should consider myself lucky to have lived 35 years.” After concluding her statement, she walked past him back to her seat.
Jeff Metcalf then took his turn, directly confronting Anthony. “We got robbed!” he exclaimed, urging Anthony not to look down. He dismissed claims that the incident had racial motivations, stating, “This was never about race. It’s either right or wrong.” He defended his sons against accusations of bullying, asserting, “My sons were not bullies.”
Jeff also recounted the harassment his family faced after Austin’s death, sharing a shocking personal account: “I was slapped six times.” He expressed how deeply Austin’s death affected him: “My son’s death destroyed the person I was. He no longer exists.” He described grief not just as sadness but as “unfiltered, pure anger,” striking the table in frustration.
Jeff confronted Anthony again, expressing that a piece of him died with Austin. “You don’t belong in this community!” he declared. He acknowledged he had forgiven Anthony for his actions, but clarified, “I won’t forgive you for what you did.” As he moved back to his seat, he glanced at Anthony, who remained with his head bowed.
Carmelo Anthony was found guilty of stabbing Austin Metcalf to death during a confrontation at a track meet in April 2025. The confrontation reportedly began under the team tent and escalated, although Anthony claimed he acted in self-defense.
This case has drawn significant national attention, resulting in heated social media discussions, protests, and various allegations concerning harassment related to it.
