J.K. Rowling Critiques Activists for Ignoring Iranian Protests

British author J.K. Rowling has called out activists who claim to champion human rights but have been silent about the protests in Iran. In a post that gained over 3 million views on X, she suggested these individuals have “exposed” themselves as more concerned with certain narratives than with genuine oppression.

Rowling highlighted the contradiction of activists opposing the West while overlooking the struggles of Iranians standing up against a harsh regime. “If you claim to support human rights but can’t show solidarity with those fighting for freedom in Iran, you’re exposing yourself,” she stated, implying a selective approach to activism.

The protests in Iran are intensifying, with citizens calling for basic freedoms. These demonstrations are now entering their third week and have spread across 180 cities, including major urban areas like Tehran and Shiraz. The resilience displayed by the protesters echoes previous uprisings against the ruling clerics.

Despite the ongoing violence and repression—marked by internet blackouts and mass arrests—many Western voices that previously rallied for Palestinian causes remain conspicuously quiet regarding the Iranian struggle. “Where are our street solidarity rallies?” asked journalist Jonathan Harnov, pointing out the silence among activists.

Commentators have also raised questions about the commitment of pro-Palestinian movements to Iranian issues. One highlighted the irony of demanding justice for Palestine while neglecting the plight of the Iranian people. Iranian dissidents have long criticized these movements for aligning with Iranian government narratives, thereby downplaying the regime’s oppressive actions back home.

Some activists have called for a reassessment of priorities. Economic journalist Mani Basherzad suggested that if the goal is to ‘liberate Palestine,’ perhaps there should be a parallel emphasis on freeing Iran from the regime that supports many of the issues activists claim to oppose. This aligns with previous sentiments expressed by Iranian-American dissident Masih Alinejad, who accused Western pro-Palestinian protests of ignoring Iranian suffering.

The topic has gained renewed attention following warnings from U.S. intelligence about Iranian-affiliated operatives trying to exploit anti-Israel protests in America, raising broader questions about the credibility of these movements.

Rowling has previously faced backlash for her views, particularly regarding transgender issues, but her latest remarks on Iran have further ignited scrutiny of activism perceived as selectively outraged. As protests continue, there’s increasing public critique of movements that, while vocal against Western democracy, seemingly remain muted in the face of Islamist oppression.
