Wasted Efforts on Epstein Case

It feels like the Southern District of New York, known as SDNY, is caught up in one of the most pointless endeavors in American legal history. Almost all of the 200 federal prosecutors working there are dedicated to going through millions of pages of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Their goal? To redact names and details of his alleged victims so the complete “Epstein file” can eventually be made public.

This rush has been driven by a wave of social media frenzy—first ignited by right-wing circles and now propelled by some top Democrats. The theory circulating claims that Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, blackmailed numerous globe-trotting billionaires, all part of a supposed vast conspiracy.

With conspiracy theories, it seems that any information contradicting the accepted narrative only adds to the believers’ conviction. If it doesn’t support their “truth,” it becomes part of the conspiracy’s cover-up. Those who buy into these theories often remain unconvinced, no matter the evidence.

While the initial hype began with the right, last year saw Democrats jumping in, speculating about the possible involvement of then-President Donald Trump on Epstein’s so-called “client list.”

In an effort to clear up any lingering doubts—rational doubts, at least—Trump has backed full disclosure. This pushed for the rapid release of a large cache of documents related to Epstein, even if they have to be redacted to safeguard potential victims.

Yet, this means that the SDNY, a crucial player in the federal judiciary, has had to pause other important cases to tend to these growing demands surrounding Epstein.

For instance, Nicolás Maduro and his wife are in prison, facing intricate charges, and one would hope that U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton can devote the necessary resources there. Instead, the focus is diverted into the maze of Epstein-related concerns.

Similarly, a complicated federal death penalty case against health executive Luigi Mangione involves a nuanced definition of stalking. Once again, the SDNY is preoccupied with Epstein theories instead of managing these pressing legal matters.

Conspiracy enthusiasts and skeptics alike tend to dismiss other significant events in the U.S., labeling them distractions from what they believe is a massive cover-up. Issues like immigration policy, Greenland, tariffs, and Ukraine are seen as mere diversions to keep the public unaware of the so-called truth.

However, the Biden administration had access to all this supposedly explosive Epstein material for four years. If there were any incriminating evidence involving Trump, those who seemed willing to explore every nook and cranny during investigations would have likely discovered a way to expose it—or at least launch a special inquiry.

Let’s be realistic: Epstein had his issues, but he wasn’t the only player in the game. There have been hints linking him to nefarious activities, but it’s also clear that many skilled legal experts are just pouring their energy into arguing with people who might never shift their views. It’s as if they are wasting time on a gift that doesn’t benefit anyone. Meanwhile, genuine criminals continue to slip through the cracks without facing prosecution.
