Blades Brown made his first professional cut at a PGA Tour event.
The 17-year-old, from Nashville, Tennessee, fired a 3-under 68 on Thursday and a 2-under 69 on Friday, finishing at 5-under overall.
“I felt very relieved,” Brown said.
“I had about nine footers for a par on hole 17, and thankfully it fell. I'm very grateful to be here. I'm playing golf on a golf course like this. It's difficult.”
Brown, fresh from the bogey on the 16th, felt the pressure of the cut line while standing on the tee on the 17th. He had to push his approach shot into the greenside bunker and get up and down to keep his weekend hope alive. A poor shot followed, but as the brown hinted, he was able to make a save. He then proceeded to the par 5 18th birdie to lock up on Saturday morning tee time.
“I was looking at the cut line just to see what it would turn out,” Brown said.
“I knew it was everywhere around three or four. [under]and I was happy to be able to participate in 5. [under]. ”
Brown's final PGA tour started at the American Express, where he stumbled over a stretch and missed a cut. He shot a back nine 40 in the third round. The American Express features a 54-hole cut. This poor stretch included a double bogey in 17th place, par 3, famous for the Pete Dye Stadium course. He found water in the tee.
Since then, Brown has been working on his game with lots of golf balls and hopes he doesn't make the same mistake twice.
“I'm so happy to be able to come to Mexico here and speak Spanish,” Brown said.
“I've been taking Spanish for four years in high school so I'm really happy to have chosen it over Latin. I'm so happy to be able to enjoy it here at the resort and I'll wait for the next two days. I can't do that.”
