Teen Cyclist Finlay Tarling Dies in Accident

The NSN Cycling Team shared heartbreaking news on social media Friday: British teenager Finlay Tarling has passed away due to an accident during the Volta a Portugal cycling race.

Reports indicate that Tarling, who was just 19, was struck by a car that unexpectedly entered the race route. The driver apparently ignored signals from event stewards and came onto the road going the wrong way.

“We are devastated to report the loss of Finlay Tarling today at the Volta in Portugal,” the team posted. “Finn was cherished by us all, and beyond that, he was a son, brother, and friend to many. His absence will be deeply felt.”

The tragic incident took place during the eighth stage of the race, which spanned from Melgaço to Fafe in northern Portugal. It’s not clear if other cyclists were involved in the collision, but Tarling did seek immediate medical help.

The organizers of the Volta a Portugal, along with the Portuguese Cycling Federation, expressed their sorrow, stating, “In this moment of profound sadness, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Finlay Tarling’s family, his teammates, the NSN development team, and all of his friends and loved ones.”

Following the accident, the eighth stage of the race was canceled “as a sign of respect and remembrance.” Portuguese President Antonio José Seguro and Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro both offered their sympathies to the Tarling family.

Finlay Tarling was the younger sibling of cyclist Joshua Tarling, who rides for Ineos Grenadiers. Finlay had represented Great Britain in various road and track events and achieved a notable second-place finish in Stage 6 of the Tour du Rwanda earlier this year.
