Tragic Incident at Family Resort
Authorities are investigating the motive behind a young mother who allegedly murdered her husband and their three-year-old son before attempting to take her own life this week at a well-known family resort in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains.
The incident, involving 27-year-old Metallica Rose Harrison, occurred during the family’s stay at the Great Wolf Lodge. Reports indicate that she stabbed her husband, Charles, and their toddler, identified only as “T.H.,” before trying to harm herself, according to law enforcement and a report by WNEP.
This case adds to a disturbing trend of young mothers being charged with violent acts against their families, reminiscent of the high-profile trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of murdering her three children and attributing her actions to postpartum depression. Clancy’s trial ended in a mistrial earlier this month, as jurors couldn’t reach a unanimous decision. She is currently unable to walk due to an alleged suicide attempt.
In Harrison’s situation, she reportedly called 911 after the attack, seeking guidance on how to harm herself, expressing a desire for assistance in dying. “My husband and son are already gone in the bed in the living room,” she allegedly told emergency responders. “They’re already gone, I’m sorry,” her comments outlined in a police affidavit indicated.
Upon entering Room 2030, authorities discovered both victims deceased on the mattresses. Charles Harrison had sustained multiple stab wounds to the chest, while their young son had one stab wound. Investigators discovered a butcher knife in the bathroom and a smaller knife in the sink, both of which did not belong to the lodge. Additionally, they found containers likely containing blood and several bottles of medication.
The Great Wolf Lodge features a variety of family-friendly amenities, including a pool and elaborate play areas. The family had checked into the resort on September 21 and had extended their stay on October 5, according to police reports.
Monroe County District Attorney Mike Mancuso referred to the incident as a “violent domestic tragedy,” reflecting on the loss of life involved. When asked about a possible motive, he stated, “That’s one of the most perplexing questions.”
Harrison, a resident of Towanda, Pennsylvania, declined to provide a statement to authorities when they arrived, reportedly saying she was “suicidal, not stupid.” According to the New York Post, as emergency medical services transported her, she made disturbing comments about wanting to end her life and expressed her distress about her family situation.
“Every day, I work so hard to be the best person, the best mother, the best wife,” she reportedly expressed during the ambulance ride. “It wasn’t supposed to end like this. I was supposed to have my happy family. That’s what I envisioned since I was a child,” she reflected.
Harrison faces two counts of criminal homicide, with her court date yet to be determined.
