Young Nets squad filled with uncertainties about experienced players

Nets Face Challenge of Youthful Roster Without Experienced Guidance

In the past, when the Nets were a struggling young team, experienced players provided guidance. Now, with one of the youngest rosters in decades, the question arises: do they have the right mentors this time?

It’s still uncertain.

Jalen Wilson shared his thoughts on the importance of mentorship, stating, “That’s crucial, especially in your first few years in the league. Everything moves so fast and is so different from college. Having friends who have taken a similar journey makes it easier.” But, do they really have that support?

DeMarre Carroll, Jared Dudley, and Ed Davis now fill the mentoring roles previously held by players like D’Angelo Russell and Caris LeVert. With five new players on the team, three of whom are teenagers, it’s essential to find the right teachers for them.

Terrence Mann commented on his role, saying, “I’m just here to share what I’ve learned in my seven years in the NBA. They can take it or leave it.” He acknowledged the unquantifiable nature of providing guidance, noting, “There’s definitely a lot of that, but I do it naturally. I see a gap, and I try to fill it.”

The team, led by Mann, Nick Claxton, Michael Porter Jr., and Haywood Highsmith, faces skepticism from former players about their leadership dynamics. Kenny Anderson raised a concern, suggesting the lack of a mature veteran could hinder their growth: “They don’t have any veterans. That’s not a good mix.”

Claxton has the longest tenure, Porter has championship experience, Highsmith brings Finals experience, and Mann has even started in the Western Conference Finals. Mann seems to be the most reliable, health-wise and emotionally, which is a plus.

Fernandes noted how the more seasoned players are stepping up, even if Highsmith hasn’t played much: “He’s been a great professional and communicates well with the team. That’s a positive.” Despite his lack of playtime, Highsmith’s influence is significant for the squad.

The need for leadership is critical. Retaining Highsmith, who was expected to be ready for the opening game but now won’t be evaluated until mid-December, is seen as vital over other players like Kobe Bufkin.

“I’m not going into detail on the decision, but Heywood is a superb professional,” Fernandes stated, emphasizing Highsmith’s positive impact on team culture. “He’s been great for us, even if he can’t play right now.”

Cam Thomas, meanwhile, is sidelined with a left hamstring strain, expected to be re-evaluated in three to four weeks. As for updates, Fernandes simply expressed, “We’ll keep you informed as the timeline develops. We’re counting the days.”
