NYT columnist and Duke University professor Frank Bruni said Friday on PBS’s “Firing Lines” that many young progressives are concerned about how horrifying the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks in Israel were. He said he never admitted that it happened.
Host Margaret Huber said, “So you’re teaching on a college campus.”
“I teach at Duke University,” Bruni said.
Mr. Hoover said: “You’re a professor at Duke University. As a university professor, what is your assessment of how this issue has become so active among this generation of college students?”
Bruni said, “A lot of college students in this generation have kind of a paradigm or lens that they use to evaluate the world. Dark-skinned people must be inherently wronged, and therefore the situation in which they are most likely to be in the right position.
Hoover said: “So they tend to side with what they consider small based on that paradigm?”
Bruni said, “They are. And I think you saw it play out after October 7th. Listen, I mean, our attention, our empathy, my “But if you look at what happened in the immediate aftermath of October 7th, a lot of young people, a lot of young people on the progressive left. , sometimes referred to as “social justice warriors,” I find that they don’t waste any time at all. To really realize what happened in Israel and how horrible it was. They quickly applied this paradigm and began defending not only the Palestinians, but also Hamas, sometimes in sinister ways. ”
