Back in 2022, the MLB Pipeline highlighted three standout prospects for the Mets: Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Ronnie Mauricio. Notably, Francisco Lindor dubbed them the “Baby Mets.”
Fast forward a few years, and despite some ups and downs, injuries, and a mix of performances, those prospects seem to have developed significantly.
The Mets’ young hitters led their team to a narrow 3-2 victory over the Angels, thrilling a packed crowd of 43,055 at Citifield on Tuesday.
With this win, the Mets improved to a record of 58-44, managing to bounce back with three consecutive wins after a rough patch. They also secured the series ahead of Wednesday’s final game.
Frankie Montas delivered a solid performance, pitching 5²/₃ innings and giving up two runs, though the workload on the Mets’ pitching staff has been heavy.
Relievers stepped up, showcasing clutch performances, especially Rico Garcia, who helped close out the game by inducing Mike Trout’s pop-up that ended a potential rally.
It’s quite a roller coaster for the Mets, particularly for this trio. They’ve faced various challenges—Alvarez has had to work through ups and downs, Baty has dealt with his share of frustrations, and Mauricio has battled injuries, including a torn ACL.
The Mets initially struggled to score, managing only two runs over the first five innings. Then, the trio started to find their rhythm.
Baty seemed more at ease and made a significant contribution with a double that hit the center-right wall, earning David Stearns’ trust.
Alvarez, called up after an impressive stint at Triple-A Syracuse, made an impact by launching a two-run homer to left field, tying the game. His power was evident; he even celebrated with a flex of his arm as he rounded third base.
Mauricio also showcased his development, stealing two bases following a solid single, and contributed to what turned out to be the game-winning run from Brandon Nimmo’s two hits.
Just a day after overcoming a four-run deficit, the Mets managed another comeback, aided by a bullpen that held strong.
Garcia, who had been designated for assignment and picked up by the Yankees before returning to the Mets, played a key role in their efforts.
Reed Garrett stood out, keeping the opposition scoreless, while Stanek notched his third save of the season.
