Cincinnati Bengals Coach Zac Taylor to Return Next Season
Zac Taylor, head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, will be back for the upcoming season, even though the team has missed the playoffs for three consecutive years, as confirmed by the organization on Monday.
In a wave of coaching changes sweeping the league, Taylor managed to keep his job. Bengals executives acknowledged that the season was “disappointing,” but they still expressed their support for him.
“We entered the season with high expectations and came off a successful four-game winning season, led by a team that had taken us to a Super Bowl and two AFC Championship games,” stated Bengals president Mike Brown. “We recognize the frustrations and disappointments of this season. Missing the playoffs again highlights that we still have work to do.”
He continued, “Our aim is to build a team capable of consistently competing at the highest level, aiming for championships. Hence, after thoughtful deliberation, I am confident in both [director of player personnel] Duke Tobin and Zac Taylor as the right leaders. They’ve shown they can build and guide a team competitive for a championship. We trust their plan and look forward to returning to our desired level of success.”
This past season, quarterback Joe Burrow struggled with turf toe and was mostly sidelined, although he did come back after surgery. Despite these challenges, the Bengals showcased their offensive potential, finishing with a record of 6-11, after a narrow loss to the Cleveland Browns at 20-18.
When asked about his discussions with the front office following the game, Taylor remained tight-lipped, simply stating, “I’ll keep them secret.”
Since joining the organization in 2019, Taylor holds a record of 52-63-1. Under his leadership, the Bengals made the postseason twice, including two AFC Championship appearances and one Super Bowl run.
Quarterback Joe Burrow expressed confidence in the coaching staff after the last season game, saying, “I have a lot of confidence in the coaching staff. I know they’ve worked hard to put us in a good position.”
