Zachary Levi Shares How David’s Story Motivates Him: ‘We Are all Saved through God’s Mercy’

Zachary Levi’s recent focus on faith-based projects is, well, fairly new for him. However, he’s eager to clarify that his journey with faith began in his childhood.

Growing up in a Christian household, he attended church regularly, where discussions about “Jesus and the Bible” were common. By the time he turned 18, he started a more deliberate exploration of his faith, consciously deciding that he didn’t want to simply embrace beliefs because they were those of his parents.

These days, Levi identifies as a Christian, believing in the truth of Christianity. “God has had a hand in shaping my career every step of the way,” he shared with Crosswalk Headlines.

He gained fame in Hollywood through Disney films, the NBC series Chuck, and Shazam!. Yet, besides these franchises, he has also become well-known for taking part in faith-related movies like American Underdog, Unbreakable Boy, and Sara’s Oil.

Recently, he took on a new faith-based role as the host and narrator of David: King of Israel, a four-part docudrama on Fox Nation. This series showcases the Biblical narrative of David, from his beginnings as a shepherd to becoming a king.

“There’s a reason David resonates with so many of us. It’s because he is truly a man after God’s own heart, and that’s what we should all aspire to be,” Levi remarked.

David’s tale also touches on themes of failure and redemption, which reflect our own human experiences.

“There’s definitely a lot of drama and intrigue throughout this story,” Levi noted. “Being chosen as king while being after God’s heart can lead to both the highest highs and the lowest lows. You can find yourself fleeing for your life and, despite rising to power, you can still fall into the traps of ego and make really poor choices.”

David’s reliance on God’s grace is something that ultimately connects to all people, Levi emphasized.

“God sees everything, even today,” Levi reflected, pointing to Psalm 139, which David wrote and serves as a source of inspiration for him. “We must remember that, especially as people of faith, we are all saved by grace through God’s mercy and forgiveness.”

Levi feels a deep connection to David’s story, particularly relating to the themes of needing God’s grace and desiring His love.

“Nothing can separate you from God’s love,” he told Crosswalk Headlines. “God is always ready, waiting for us to reach out and say, ‘Use me. How can I help make this world better and share Your love with others?'”

He believes that his career and the opportunities he’s had are blessings from God.

“He’s given me my natural talent,” Levi explained. “I was able to pursue theater from a young age, and I’ve been fortunate to have people along the way recognize and nurture that talent, leading to a career spanning over 26 years in Hollywood. It’s a bit surreal… and I genuinely hope to keep it going for many more years.”
