Zack Starkey’s Departure from The Who Amid Assault Incident
Zack Starkey, the son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, has faced an assault incident shortly after announcing his intention to leave The Who to focus on his own music. A couple of weeks back, he reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the band’s performance.
The iconic band shared a statement on Instagram on Sunday, confirming their split with Starkey for the second time this month. They mentioned, “After years of excellent work on drums from Zack, it’s time for change. He has many new projects on the horizon, and we wish him well.” It’s a bittersweet sort of farewell, I think.
In response, Starkey took to his Instagram to counter the band’s narrative. “I was dismissed just two weeks after returning, and was asked to claim that I had ceased pursuing other musical opportunities. This isn’t the truth—who would just walk away from something they love?” he stated.
He further elaborated, expressing his gratitude towards the people who have supported him throughout. “I wouldn’t want to disappoint so many incredible fans who stood by me,” he wrote.
The Who’s guitarist, Pete Townshend, suggested the split was mutual, but Starkey disagreed. He clarified his ongoing musical endeavors, saying, “Yes, I’ve always had other projects. My appearances have been sporadic on tour, aside from a couple of extensive ones in the early 2000s.” It feels a bit messy, to be honest.
Starkey went on to list dates and events to show that he managed his solo efforts alongside the band without issues in the past. “I always had time for other projects, and they never interfered with the band,” he pointed out.
Having been with The Who since 1996, Starkey was dismissed previously in April due to concerns over his performance during a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Townshend later reversed that decision, allowing him back in the band. Now, however, he’s stepping away just months before the band’s farewell North American tour.
The band’s Instagram has indicated that Scott will be taking Starkey’s place for the upcoming shows. It’s certainly a turbulent time for everyone involved.
