Zelenska acknowledges Melania Trump for highlighting Ukraine's efforts in child recovery

Ukraine’s Efforts to Recover Children Taken by Russia

Ukraine is actively working to recover thousands of children who have been taken by Russia, and Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska has expressed her appreciation for Melania Trump’s involvement in bringing attention to this critical issue.

“The community that First Lady Melania Trump has built is so important,” Zelenska mentioned during a recent interview. She continued, saying, “I am very grateful to her for being involved in this. She has a deep understanding of how serious this problem is. Her advocacy is vital, and I believe her support will be immensely beneficial.”

Urgent Initiative for Children

Zelenska pointed out that the success of these recovery efforts hinges on uniting a coalition of nations to locate the children and exert pressure on Russia to return them. So far, around 2,000 children have successfully been brought back to Ukraine, but she expressed concern that the current pace is too slow.

“If we keep going at this rate, it’ll take decades to reunite everyone with their families,” she warned. “It is very important that as many countries as possible join us in this effort,” she added.

There are still approximately 20,000 children reportedly missing and believed to have been “forced to migrate” by Russia since the onset of the war in 2022. Recently, the U.S. announced a new initiative, pledging $25 million to support the return and rehabilitation of these displaced children.

Investigations have shown that many of the children have been relocated to over 200 facilities across Russia and occupied territories, where they have been placed with Russian families or subjected to “re-education” programs. Some of these sites are also reportedly linked to military training.

Zelenska emphasized that efforts to find the children are further complicated by a lack of reliable information, blaming Russia for obscuring their whereabouts. The challenge is immense, and the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated.
