Zelensky Criticizes the Ineffectiveness of Global Organizations at the U.N.

Ukrainian President’s Address at the UN

Ukrainian President Voldy Mirzelensky took significant time at the UN General Assembly in New York City on Tuesday to highlight the global dangers stemming from Russia’s invasion, focusing particularly on the rise of drone warfare. He expressed disappointment with the international organizations’ inability to effectively address the ongoing conflict.

“The 21st century isn’t fundamentally different from the past,” Zelensky stated. “If a nation desires peace, it must confront the issue of weapons. It’s a reality we can’t escape; it’s not just about international law or cooperation, but rather who has the weapons that determines survival.”

“International law isn’t effective unless there’s a strong ally ready to support it. Even that requires military might. It’s a harsh truth, but without it, the situation would be even direr. The only guarantees of security are friendships and armaments,” he added.

Zelensky criticized international organizations, including the United Nations, for being too weak to stop the violence, not just in Ukraine but in various global conflicts. He noted that sanctions against Syria have progressed slowly despite the regime change nearly a year ago.

“Israel is an example of this stagnation,” he remarked. “It’s been nearly two years without the release of hostages.” He pointed out ongoing issues, like the utilization of chemical weapons, the manipulation of hunger as a tactic, and the looming risk of nuclear incidents due to Russian military actions near Ukraine’s nuclear plants.

“This insanity persists because international organizations lack strength,” he asserted. He also referenced instances of Russian drones violating the airspace of Poland and Russian fighter jets breaching Estonian airspace.

Throughout his speech, Zelensky underscored Russia as a significant source of malevolent influence globally, affecting neighboring nations like Georgia, Belarus, and Moldova. “It’s crucial to remember how we once overlooked the need to assist Georgia after Russian assaults and missed the warning signs in Belarus,” he reflected.

Zelensky mentioned Iran multiple times as a destabilizing force and criticized the Taliban in Afghanistan for regressing the country. He highlighted that in some Latin American nations, criminal organizations now hold more power than their governments.

He also expressed concern about escalating political violence in the West, speculating that divine intervention may have protected Donald Trump from a potential assassination during the 2024 presidential election.

“Whenever I check the news, it feels like violent incidents are occurring all over the globe,” he noted.

Zelensky pointed to these various crises as proof of the failure of international organizations and reiterated his belief that “survival will depend on who wields the weapons”. He warned that there is an urgent need to address the proliferation of drones, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“Weapons are evolving at a rate that outpaces our defenses,” he warned.

He remarked that the Russian invasion has created “tens of thousands of individuals who are adept at drone warfare,” stressing, “This is the legacy of Russia’s engagement in war.” Previously, drones were intricate and costly tools of the most powerful nations; now, even basic models can traverse vast distances. Geography no longer confines warfare.

“What will happen when terrorist groups and cartels gain access to these drones?” he pondered. “The pace at which the world adapts to these threats is alarmingly slow, while weapons are advancing rapidly.”

Zelensky expressed fears of a future dominated by fully autonomous drone warfare, managed by artificial intelligence without human oversight, creating a genuinely unsafe environment for humanity.

The president mentioned Ukraine had no choice but to engage in the arms race by developing its own drones, which has unfortunately escalated the danger associated with modern warfare. He highlighted the immense financial strain of this drone conflict, which hampers Ukraine’s ability to invest in constructive ventures. This emphasis on drone defense, he suggested, may reroute UN priorities, making them focus more on protecting civilians from Russian aggression rather than climate change.

“We urgently need global regulations concerning the use of AI in military applications,” he advocated. “This is as critical as combating the spread of nuclear weaponry.”

Zelensky concluded by stressing the value of Ukraine’s partnerships, suggesting that they are more beneficial for real defense compared to international organizations. He urged for a complete trade halt with Russia to demonstrate a commitment to peace, curtailing the funds needed for the ongoing conflict.

“Consider the nations represented here at this assembly—countries emerging from war, striving for peace, or those preparing for potential conflict,” he concluded.
