Zelensky: Discussion with Trump was significant and productive

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently noted he had a “very important and fruitful” chat with President Trump. They covered various topics, including the frontlines in Eastern Europe, air defense systems, and areas for mutual investment.

In a social media post on platform X, Zelensky expressed hope that Trump was enjoying the July 4th holiday. He thanked the U.S. for its military support thus far and emphasized Ukraine’s wish to end the ongoing conflict with Russia, seeking a “fair, lasting, and dignified peace.”

“We talked about the current situation, including the Russian airstrikes and the broader frontline developments. President Trump is well-informed, and I appreciated his attention to Ukraine. We discussed air defense options and agreed to collaborate to bolster protection in the air. A meeting between our teams is also in the works,” he added.

Zelensky mentioned a “detailed conversation” with Trump about collaborating on defense industry capabilities and production.

“We’re open to a direct project with the U.S., which we see as crucial for security, particularly regarding drones and relevant technologies,” the Ukrainian leader stated.

He also highlighted that Trump criticized Kyiv and other areas following one of Russia’s largest air attacks, where 550 drones and missiles were launched. According to Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko, the assault resulted in one fatality and over 24 injuries.

Trump’s call with Zelensky came right after he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where he expressed disappointment, noting that there had been “no progress” toward achieving a ceasefire in the prolonged conflict.

“I’m extremely disappointed in today’s conversation with Putin because I don’t think he’s willing to change. It’s really a shame,” Trump told reporters.

From Putin’s side, he indicated that Russia wouldn’t pull back from its military objectives in Ukraine. Trump urged him to consider ending the conflict, but the Kremlin reported that Putin rebuffed this overture.

The timing of Trump’s conversation with Zelensky is notable, as it follows the Pentagon’s decision to halt air defense and munitions transfers to Ukraine.

“We’re supplying weapons… working with them to offer support. However, former President Biden has depleted our resources and provided those weapons,” Trump remarked in a Thursday evening press gathering.

While Trump and his administration aimed to bring an end to the conflict in Eastern Europe, they faced significant obstacles as Russia seemed to remain firm in its demands.
