President Zelenskiy on Thursday announced the dismissal of General Valery Zarzhiny, and military leaders said the regime was trying a new war strategy.
Zarzini came under intense government scrutiny after he told The Economist in November that the delayed counteroffensive had failed and the war was at a stalemate.
But Zelenskiy said the overhaul was aimed at promoting leaders with combat experience on the front lines.
“This is about the structure of our military, the management of the Ukrainian military, the exposure of Ukrainian commanders and the combat experience of the commanders of this war,” Zelenskiy said. “Every soldier, every sergeant, every officer who sees the front line understands what decisions need to be made. The technical efficiency of the actions of the troops has increased significantly. Restart generality Staff at all levels must know not only the soldiers at ground zero, but also the front lines.”
The general was reportedly holding private talks with the Russian side to discuss conditions for a peaceful end to the war.
Experts say the general is widely popular among military officials. His ouster is likely to destroy morale within the Ukrainian military.
