Zelensky Discusses Peace Efforts Following Trump Meeting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism about finalizing peace negotiations with security guarantees within the next ten days after his meeting with President Trump. “Our partners will likely clarify the security guarantees, and we’ll see more specifics soon,” Zelensky stated, addressing the media following their conversation. He mentioned that everything should be officially documented within a week.
Zelensky also indicated his willingness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin “in any form.” He noted that after Trump’s recent summit with Putin in Alaska, officials from the involved countries discussed the need for a ceasefire in Eastern Europe.
Despite this, Zelensky expressed a preference for a direct one-on-one meeting with Putin prior to any larger negotiations. “We’re prepared for any format at the leader level, as it’s crucial for tackling these complex and sensitive issues,” he remarked. “These matters are significant for us.” He assured that he had support from European leaders for a bilateral discussion with Putin, which would then be followed by a trilateral meeting.
The Ukrainian president highlighted that any potential security guarantees would also address the release of all Ukrainians detained since the Russian invasion began in 2022. “We talked about security assurances, which are vital for peace,” he noted, emphasizing gratitude for the signs of U.S. support in this regard.
Zelensky further stressed, “Today, it’s about bringing our children home and releasing those held captive by Russia. We agreed to focus on this.” The White House acknowledged that the issue of children held as prisoners resonates deeply with First Lady Melania Trump.
In a recent letter to Putin during the Alaska Summit, she shared sentiments concerning the universal dreams of children, regardless of their backgrounds. “It’s our duty, as parents and leaders, to nurture the hopes of the next generation,” she wrote. “We must work diligently to create a dignified world, ensuring that all children are enveloped in peace and have a secure future.”
During his meeting with European leaders, Trump reiterated their commitment to supporting Ukraine following the summit with Putin, emphasizing the importance of security guarantees in ceasefire discussions. In a brief moment captured on microphone with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump alluded to the possibility that Putin might be open to “making a deal.”
