Zelensky Plans New Meeting with Trump at UN General Assembly

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced his intention to meet with President Trump next week during the UN General Assembly. This comes at a time when Russia continues its aggressive actions against Ukraine, despite ongoing pressures for peace negotiations.

The two leaders are expected to discuss security guarantees supported by Ukraine, its European allies, and the U.S. Trump addressed the UN audience on Tuesday, and Zelensky is scheduled to follow up with his remarks on Wednesday.

“I would like to get a sense of how our partners perceive the need for security assurances,” Zelensky expressed to reporters in Kyiv on Friday. He highlighted the groundwork that has been laid for security assurances that Europe is prepared to adopt, especially with U.S. involvement. There has been extensive dialogue between European and American military leaders, he noted.

Zelensky also mentioned that discussions with the first U.S. woman are on the calendar for next week.

Ukraine has been advocating for these security assurances to protect against potential future Russian invasions. However, the Kremlin views the presence of Western military personnel as a threat.

While Trump seeks to bring an end to the conflict that has persisted for over three years in Eastern Europe, progress appears stalled as Russia continues its air assaults on Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin has largely resisted a bilateral summit with Zelensky but has extended an invitation for a meeting in Moscow.

Recently, Zelensky reported an overnight Russian attack involving 580 drones and 40 missiles, affecting at least nine regions, including Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kyiv. The siege resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries.

Ukrainian officials indicated that a missile targeting Dnipro struck an apartment building, using cluster munitions.

Zelensky commented, “These attacks aren’t about military necessity; they are part of a calculated strategy by Russia to instill fear in civilians and dismantle infrastructure.” He emphasized the need for a robust international response, stating that while Ukraine has shown its capability to defend itself and Europe, collective action is essential. Plans are underway to strengthen air defenses, boost weapon supplies, and impose further sanctions on Russian military resources.

Additionally, on Friday, 31 Russian MiGs entered Estonian airspace for a brief period, which was condemned by Estonian officials. Prime Minister Kristen Michal declared the violation unacceptable and announced that the Estonian government seeks consultations under Article 4 of NATO.
