Zelensky: Sending NATO planes to detect Russian drones in Poland is an important milestone

The President of Ukraine, Voldymir Zelensky, expressed his appreciation for the deployment of NATO aircraft to intercept Russian drones over Poland following Wednesday’s events, which involved attacks on Ukraine.

Zelensky emphasized the significance of using fighter jets from various European nations to down Russian munitions and safeguard lives, stating, “This is a crucial precedent.” He shared his thoughts on social media.

He also mentioned Ukraine’s long-standing suggestion for partners to establish a unified air defense system that could successfully counter drones and missiles through a combined effort of combat aviation and preventive measures.

This move by the Kremlin is viewed as an escalation, and a NATO spokesperson indicated it marks the first time the alliance is confronting a potential airspace threat.

Additionally, Ukraine reported having shot down around 250 Russian drones, including Shahed variants, which are unmanned combat drones sourced from Iran.

Zelensky noted that eight drones were detected over Polish airspace, with some believed to have originated from Belarus, where Russian and Belarusian troops started joint military exercises on Friday.

“The Russian invasion presents dangers to all independent nations in our region, and coordinated actions are essential for ensuring reliable security,” he stated in a post on social media.

The Baltic states—Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia—expressed their concerns over the increasing threat from Russia to Eastern European sovereignty.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausda remarked on social media, asserting, “Russia is intentionally amplifying its aggression, becoming an escalating threat to Europe.”

Estonian Foreign Minister Margas Tsekna pointed out that the drones serve as a clear reminder that Russia poses risks not just to Ukraine, but to all of Europe and NATO.

According to reports from the Associated Press, one individual was killed and another injured in the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine, while another injury was reported in the same vicinity.

In light of the violence, Poland announced its intention to invoke Article 4 of NATO, which compels member states to engage in consultations whenever they perceive a threat to territorial integrity, political independence, or security.
