Zelenskyy criticizes the IOC for disqualifying a Ukrainian athlete

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday after Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladislav Heraskevich was disqualified for wearing a helmet that honored the victims of the ongoing war with Russia.

The IOC stated that Heraskevich’s decision to wear a helmet in tribute to over 20 deceased athletes and coaches violated its policy against political expressions in competition. This ruling sparked significant backlash from the Ukrainian athlete community.

“Sport should not imply forgetfulness, and the Olympic movement should work to prevent wars rather than succumb to aggressors,” Zelenskiy expressed on social media. He further stated that the IOC’s decision regarding Heraskevich misrepresents the core principles of Olympism, which should advocate for fairness and peace.

Zelenskiy praised the athlete for his stance, emphasizing that the helmet, marked with the likeness of a fallen Ukrainian competitor, symbolizes honor and serves as a reminder of the severe cost of the fight for independence.

He pointed out that Russia is the true violator of Olympic principles, as it continues its war against Ukraine and other neighboring countries, while athletes from Russia and Belarus are still permitted to compete under a neutral flag during the Olympics.

The president noted the ongoing aggression, adding that since the full-scale invasion began, 660 Ukrainian athletes and coaches have lost their lives. Many will never again participate in the Olympics or other international events, whereas 13 Russian athletes compete in Italy, openly supporting the invasion.

“We stand proud of Vladislav and his achievements. Having courage outweighs any medal,” he said.

Before the event, Heraskevich met with IOC president Kirsty Coventry but reported that common ground couldn’t be found. The athlete was informed that his helmet was deemed “in violation of the Olympic Charter and athlete expression guidelines.” Although the IOC offered some alternatives, including a black armband, it feels discriminatory that Ukrainian athletes faced disqualification for helmet use when others did not.

The IOC shared its regret over the situation, and Coventry noted the emotional impact of the message behind the helmet, emphasizing the importance of remembrance. They expressed a desire to address concerns within the competition framework while supporting the underlying message.
