Zelenskiy and Trump Discuss Ukraine’s Security
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy shared insights from a meeting with former President Trump in Florida. As Ukraine continues to face a drawn-out conflict with Russia, both leaders are focusing on potential pathways to peace.
In a post on X, Zelenskiy highlighted that Trump reaffirmed the nation’s security, noting that discussions around various security matters were taking shape. “The details prepared by our negotiation team have been confirmed, and they’ll be presented to Congress for a vote. This is significant,” he remarked.
During their joint press conference, Trump was asked if he’d made any commitments regarding Ukraine’s security. “Absolutely, we aim to collaborate with Europe,” he responded, suggesting that while Europe might handle much of the responsibility, the U.S. would also play a role.
Zelenskiy expressed a desire for long-term security assurances from the United States. He mentioned that the proposed guarantee period of 15 years felt too short given that the conflict has been ongoing for more than a decade. “I proposed extending it to 30, 40, or even 50 years. That would be a momentous decision from Trump. He said it’s something the U.S. would look into,” Zelenskiy added in his post.
As talks between Russia and Ukraine appear to be nearing a conclusion, Trump implied that a resolution could come soon. However, he also suggested that the conflict might linger longer than anticipated.
