Zero-emissions hydrogen-electric jet disrupts conventional flights

Do you know how everyone talks about becoming green these days? Well, beyond Areer, French startups are literally taking their ideas to new heights.

They're working on this cool, hydrogen-powered jet, which can change the way we think about flying. It is called BYA-1 and is not another concept that you can never see the light of day. These people mean business. In fact, they aim to put it in service by 2030. This innovative aircraft promises to be a game changer, offering significant cost savings and environmental benefits compared to traditional jets.

BYA-1 by numbers

BYA-1 A 10-seat business jet designed from scratch around a battery-free hydrogen-electric propulsion system. This clean sheet architecture addresses the challenges of optimizing the use of gaseous hydrogen and incorporating this fuel into existing aircraft designs.

The jet has six hydrogen cylinders, four along the sides of the fuselage and two on the wing tip, supplying six 400 kW fuel cells. These fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity and steam to power electric jet turbines that achieve peak power of 2.4 MW.

The BYA-1 can fly six passengers at a 921-mile distance with a cruise speed of 357 mph and includes a healthy reserve. By lowering cruise speeds to 276 mph, you can extend the range from 50% to 1,381 miles.

Efficiency and cost reduction

Beyond aero, it claims that the BYA-1 offers substantial operational and cost benefits. The aircraft design reduces operational costs by 55% thanks to modular and swappable engine units for ground maintenance, with fewer parts and less maintenance complexity. Furthermore, by 2030, the BYA-1 will be able to save 17% on fuel costs compared to the traditional JET-A1. This is expected to increase further as green hydrogen becomes more cost-effective.

The benefits of environment and comfort

Hydrogen-electric propulsion systems provide significant improvements in the environment and passenger comfort. The BYA-1 will work with the goal of releasing zero carbon emissions during flight and reducing the aviation industry's carbon emissions. Additionally, it claims that electric jets are less noise and that if the cabin is equipped with acoustic insulation, the cabin becomes quieter than traditional jets. This translates to about 50% perceived noise reduction.

Progress towards certification

Aero is actively working to certified BYA-1 for commercial use. The company applies for design organization approval with the European Union Air Safety Authority and works with regulators to define the special conditions required for certification. Aero has already demonstrated concrete advances by implementing France's first hydrogen-electric flight using a prototype fuel system in the ultra-light aircraft seen below.

Industry impact and possibilities

With a $44 million capital and a $108 intention with a total of $914 million sales, Aero has established itself as a serious candidate for the aviation industry. The company's innovative approach could disrupt traditional air travel and accelerate the transition to cleaner aviation technology. As the aviation industry tackles environmental concerns, innovations like BYA-1 could prove important in achieving the zero carbon target by 2050.
