Screencaps Update
Here I am again, in the Screencaps lab, and let me tell you, it’s pretty humid—about 80%—and we haven’t caught a glimpse of the sun in Ohio for five days. They’re forecasting more rain all weekend. Great.
So, what’s on my plate? Well, it’s my dad’s 71st birthday this week. We had plans to hit the golf course just northwest of Dayton, but with the relentless rain, it looks like we’ll be postponing that. Have you seen the flooding over in eastern Indiana? Parts of Interstate 70 are unrecognizable, buckling and washed away. Just, wow.
In short, dad’s birthday golf will have to be pushed back. Ah well.
Before the weekend hits, a few thoughts:
- Sean Joe is due here on Sunday. He’ll be off next week. I think he’s planning on chasing after Bigfoot
- Today marks a big deal—Screencaps the III just started 4th grade! His elementary school only goes through fourth grade, so it’s kind of a bittersweet moment. Just nine months left before no one’s calling me to pick him up anymore. Feels like I’ve spent forever waiting in lines at pick-up.
Will I miss it eventually? For those who’ve gone through this, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
On a lighter note:
- If I were coaching the Raiders, I’d definitely start Fernando Mendoza in Week 1. The guy’s turning 23 in October, and trust me, he’s ready. Just throw him out there.
- Shoutout to YouTubeTV for not forcing multi-view options during the WNBA games like they did two years ago. Last night was perfect—Bengals, Steelers, and Little League baseball. What a joy!
I’ve got to mention, though, the first pitch by pop singer Zamira Zambrano was something else. She’s Venezuelan, so you’d think she’d nail outside corners, especially after her country just rocked the World Baseball Classic. Was it worse than 50 Cent’s pitch? Maybe not, but I think in Venezuela, you might need to hit a radar reading of 75 just to drive.
Thoughts on Fernando Mendoza’s NFL Debut
Fernando Mendoza recently gave thanks for an NFL debut that could rival Tom Brady’s early days. Pretty impressive, right?
University of Michigan Grading Changes
Kevin from Toboso, Ohio, had some strong opinions on the University of Michigan’s new grading system. He expressed concern for how college is more about making kids feel good than providing real education. He shared his pride in his children, who are finding success without the heavy debts that come from college.
It’s funny to think that at such a prestigious school, they’re now saying grades don’t matter anymore once you’re in. What a twist.
Wendy’s Employee Rumors
Jake, who seems to have a keen interest in Wendy’s, wrote in about his observations of former convicts and potential drug issues among employees. I don’t know if it’s a widespread thing, but I have noticed it from Detroit to Dayton. So maybe there’s something to it.
Texas High School Soccer Concerns
“Sheriff” John from Houston shared concerns about UIL’s new heat guidelines, which prevent practices in high temperatures. He thinks it’s absurd when many schools don’t even have indoor facilities. The absurdity of waiting out thunderstorms when the skies are still clear just adds to his frustration.
Naming Trends Among Suburban Moms
John from Lawrence, South Carolina, expressed gratitude for the publication of his earlier email, which didn’t quite land the way he expected. He also mentioned that one of his wife’s coworkers named her son “Commodore.” Kind of odd, right? But good kids can come from any name.
Final Thoughts
Doug from Springfield floated the idea of easing stop sign rules when there’s no traffic. He quoted a saying from the old farms that made me chuckle: “Without corn, a stop sign is a yield sign.”
And that wraps it up for today. Enjoy all the NFL preseason games happening this weekend, soak up these last summer moments, and mark your calendars for Bowling Green next week.
Stay dry and have a great weekend!
