Zhou Guanyu ‘excited’ to make F1 history at Chinese Grand Prix

For the first time since 2019, the F1 grid has returned to China. After the Chinese Grand Prix was canceled in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the circuit will return to Shanghai for this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix.

And history will be made by Sauber driver Zhou Guanyu.

Zhou becomes the first Chinese driver in F1 history to race in his home country, and the Sauber driver said this week he was “thrilled” by the opportunity and what he called the “responsibility”.

“I couldn’t be more excited to finally be racing in my hometown of Shanghai. Being the first Chinese driver to compete in F1 in China means a lot to me and is filled with immense joy, pride and responsibility. This is more than just a race to me. After four years off the calendar, the championship is finally back and with the addition of Chinese drivers to the grid we are making history. ” Chou appears in team’s pre-race media report.

“This is an opportunity to inspire and build a path for future generations interested in this sport. Once tickets went on sale, we could see the passion that awaited us, but they sold out within hours. “My country loves racing and we’ve been waiting for this moment for years,” Zhou added.

However, there are still races left and Sauber will be hoping that the strong race pace it has shown at times this year will eventually lead to points. Pit stops have been a serious issue for the team, but he showed some improvement at the Japanese Grand Prix and is hoping to make further progress this weekend.

“Shanghai has a chance to get back in the game and get on the scoreboard.” Team principal Alessandro Arunni Bravi said:. “We feel a growing confidence within the team and we want to capitalize on that to get the results we expect. “The last few weeks have been spent working with our drivers to get even more performance out of our car. It was an opportunity to work hard. I can see the car improving with each round and I’m confident that if we put everything together we can get a good result.”

“Returning to China is a great moment for our team and our sport as a whole. We not only celebrate Zhou’s first home race, but also look forward to an incredible welcome for Zhou and the team. But we also celebrate the return of F1.” [to] one of the most populous countries [on] The Earth is indispensable for the World Championship. We know the seats will be full and we hope the show will be great. ”

For Zhou, the focus this weekend will be on the best possible result. However, he admitted that a new chapter for Chinese motorsport awaits.

“But for me, the focus remains on performance. Once I get to the track, I’m going to treat this like any other weekend and work hard to get the most out of the car,” Zhou said. added.

“I can’t wait to give my all, share my passion with the whole team at trackside and at home, and start a new chapter of Chinese motorsport with the audience. But most importantly, I want to race well and earn points.” I can’t wait to get it.”
