Zion Williamson ‘not close’ to Pelicans return in brutal injury blow

The Pelicans' tough start to the season is getting even worse.

Zion Williamson has been sidelined since his last appearance on Nov. 6 with a hamstring injury that appears to be more serious than originally thought.

ESPN's Shams Charania reports. On Friday, it was announced that Williamson had “received multiple treatments on his left hamstring” and was “no closer” to returning to the court.

The oft-injured star is one of many Pelicans forced to sit out this year due to various setbacks.

The Pelicans are 4-12 heading into Friday's home game against the Warriors.

Williamson has appeared in only six games this season.

Starting guard CJ McCollum was sidelined again Friday night with a thigh injury but has appeared in just four games this season.

Backcourt teammate Dejounte Murray suffered a broken hand in the first game of the season.

Jordan Hawkins saw extended playing time in McCollum's absence, but was limited to just eight games due to a back injury.

Jose Alvarado was also playing more minutes due to injury, but is sidelined with a hamstring injury and could be sidelined for several more weeks.

Starting forward Herb Jones has played in just four games due to a shoulder injury.

And now Williamson is set to remain sidelined for extra time.

Williamson played in 70 games last season, the healthiest of his career, but was injured during the play-in round and did not play in the Pelicans' four-game sweep against the Thunder in the first round of the playoffs.

Since being selected No. 1 overall in 2019, he has appeared in only 190 regular season games and has played in at least 30 games only twice.
