New York City Candidate Dodges Questions on Controversial Phrase

Zohran Mamdani, a candidate in the New York City mayoral race, faced scrutiny on Monday for his evasive responses regarding the phrase “globalization of intifadas.” This discussion occurred during an event hosted by the New York City Musicians’ Union, where Mamdani was celebrated for his support.

Reporter Elizabeth Kim from WNYC inquired about Mamdani’s stance on the phrase and whether he felt any remorse for his previous comments. This question arose after a podcast interview where he avoided outright condemnation of the rhetoric from last month.

A New York State Legislature member commented to Kim that discussions won’t focus on media portrayals, emphasizing instead their upcoming meeting with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Mamdani mentioned that the pressing issue of affordability had been a significant part of his conversations with Jeffries, drawing parallels to historical challenges managed by former Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.

In June, following Mamdani’s unexpected win for the Democratic mayoral nomination, Jeffries noted the phrase’s inappropriateness, urging Mamdani to clarify his views as the campaign progressed.

The phrase “globalization of intifadas” has stirred tensions within the context of current Middle Eastern conflicts and the ongoing campaign in New York City. During a recent interview, Mamdani jabbed at former President Donald Trump, addressing the administration’s failings while discussing wealth disparities and social issues.

After Kim’s inquiry and Mamdani’s response, journalist Tom Elliott shared a post on X, highlighting Mamdani’s struggles to explain his position, ultimately leading to a sudden end to the press conference.

The candidate has faced similar scrutiny before, having been questioned in past interviews about his comments regarding this controversial phrase, yet he has consistently sidestepped direct answers.
