Campaign Finance Complaint Against Zoran Mamdani
Zoran Mamdani, a popular figure in the Socialist Party, is facing accusations regarding his mayoral campaign’s financial dealings. A complaint has been lodged with the city’s Campaign Finance Commission, alleging that millions were spent inappropriately outside of a super PAC.
The complaint points to $1.8 million in potentially questionable expenditures related to Mamdani’s campaign. It underscores suspicious timing and spending patterns from vendors contracted by his campaign and two independent spending groups: We the People and America for All WFP (Working Families Party). Interestingly, the accuser, Jennifer Brown, has a background as a national PAC director.
“Using information from public filings available through CFB’s Follow the Money Portal, I’ve pinpointed expenditures that have overlapping vendors, timeframes, and targeted zip codes, suggesting possible legal breaches,” remarked Brown, who filed the complaint on Saturday.
Among the vendors cited in the complaint are Debra Schommer Media Group, Molitico Consulting LLC, LC Media, and Bellwether Consulting Strategies.
Brown, who has previously been involved in campaigns for Whitney Tilson and Jim Walden, emphasized that these particular overlaps are just examples of what she discovered, suggesting that there might be more cases deserving of scrutiny.
Campaign finance regulations clearly prohibit candidates from collaborating with super PACs or independent groups backing them. Although the Supreme Court’s decision permits super PACs to spend freely, candidates receiving public funds must adhere to strict contribution and spending caps.
Brown clarified to the CFB that she is acting as an individual, not linked to any candidate or campaign.
As voting day approaches, Mamdani remains the frontrunner in the mayoral contest, outpacing Democrat Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, both of whom are running as independents.
The Campaign Finance Board has yet to respond, and Mamdani’s team has not issued a comment on the matter.
Earlier this year, Cuomo’s campaign faced a $675,000 fine from the CFB for improper coordination with a pro-Cuomo super PAC, Fix the City.
