Mamdani Accuses U.S. of Supporting Violence against Palestinians
Zohran Mamdani, a democratic and socialist candidate for mayor in New York City, claimed in an interview with Qatar’s Al-Araby TV that the U.S. federal government is effectively funding genocide against Palestinians.
During his September 21 appearance, Mamdani criticized American foreign policy while simultaneously running for office in the nation’s largest city. He described Washington as complicit in the violence occurring in the Middle East.
He stated, “Our federal government bankrolls genocide, which costs the lifespan of Palestinian children every hour more than a year. The people in New York are shocked by how we, as Americans, are financing this.” His comments aim to resonate with local constituents affected by social and foreign policy issues.
Mamdani acknowledged the potential backlash from his remarks abroad, but insisted that his campaign remains focused on addressing the needs of New Yorkers. He emphasized that values such as liberty and justice must not only be upheld domestically but must also extend to global communities, including Palestinians.
This public denouncement of U.S. policies on Qatari state television reflects Mamdani’s broader political stance, positioning him as an influential voice in New York politics. He has expressed intentions to reconsider the city’s financial ties to Israeli bonds and has not shied away from controversial slogans like “globalizing the intifadas.” His rhetoric has stirred reactions, particularly among Jewish Democrats, while his campaign events have attracted both supporters and critics.
Interestingly, there’s a personal connection between Mamdani and Qatar. Reports indicate that the Qatari administration funded a film produced by his mother, Mira Naia. This connection has been highlighted as part of a broader narrative suggesting Mamdani’s privileged background, raising questions about his criticisms of the U.S. while benefiting from Qatari support.
