Demonstrators Confront Mayoral Candidate Zoran Mamdani in Manhattan

On Friday, Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist running for mayor, was forced out of a park in downtown Manhattan amid shouts of “anti-Semitism” as security escorted him to a car.

The situation escalated at Foley Square when a visibly upset man confronted Mamdani, demanding he denounce Hezbollah and Islamic law. Security stepped in to remove the candidate from the tension-filled scene.

This incident occurs during a time of heightened scrutiny regarding Mamdani’s campaign funding. The newcomer has reportedly raised nearly $16 million, significantly surpassing his rivals in contributions, according to reports.

With about $5 million readily available, he has created a notable war chest for the upcoming general election in November.

New York City’s public financing system allows for local donations to be matched up to eight times for the first $250, which encourages small contributors. However, Mamdani’s campaign has drawn attention for receiving funds from controversial sources.

Notably, five staff members from the North American Islamic Circle contributed $1,300, resulting in $7,700 after matching. Furthermore, the Council on American-Islamic Relations donated $100,000 to his political action committee.

Additionally, more than 2,000 individual donations were made by university officials, with academics contributing upwards of $105,000, which could reach nearly $690,000 with matching funds.

Mamdani has refrained from renouncing any violent calls against Israel and, marking the October 7 anniversary, accused Israel of “genocide.”

Supporters of Mamdani counter the extremism claims, with some outlets describing his policies as “less radical,” portraying him as an advocate for local communities and the working class.
