Political Support for Mamdani

Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate, met with Hakeem Jeffries on Monday, shortly after winning the Democratic mayoral primary in June. However, he still hasn’t secured the vital support he needs.

During a private discussion with around 20 Black Clergy members from central Brooklyn, Jeffries’ team remained notably reserved.

Yvette Buckner, a Democratic operative, suggested that given Jeffries’ ambitions, he might want to tread carefully around Mamdani, who has stirred controversy.

“Rep. Hakeem Jeffries plays chess, not checkers,” she remarked. “It’s not just about the immediate move; it’s about the next five moves—considering not only New York City but the entire country.”

She emphasized that Jeffries must be particularly cautious, especially when politics could impact his party allies.

Mamdani’s brand of socialism, criticism of Israel, and relative lack of experience have caused some concern among the People’s Democrats. Typically, this group tends to rally behind fresh, charismatic candidates who enjoy a degree of popularity, especially in major urban areas.

On the other hand, lawmakers from Queens have rallied support from several notable Democrats, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with local Democratic organizations.

Still, Mamdani has missed out on backing from three of New York’s top Democrats: Jeffries, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, and Governor Kathy Hochul.

Yvette Clark, a Brooklyn representative who doesn’t back Mamdani, also participated in the meeting involving Jeffries and Mamdani. One political insider suggested that Clark’s attendance was a way for Jeffries to maintain some political distance from Mamdani.

A spokesperson for the Mamdani campaign indicated that the meeting addressed various issues, particularly the affordability crisis and the migration of Black New Yorkers from five districts. “They discussed numerous topics, including ensuring that all New Yorkers can continue to call this city home and live with dignity,” the spokesperson stated.
