Zohran Mamdani’s Controversial Comments Resurface

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has found himself in hot water after an old interview surfaced on social media, making it harder for his supporters to argue that he isn’t a communist.

Mamdani generated surprise when he won the Democratic primary for NYC mayor in June, defeating the disgraced former governor, Andrew Cuomo. Although he identifies as a socialist, many have attempted to claim he isn’t as extreme as critics on the right suggest.

In the resurfaced video, Mamdani, 33, discusses the housing crisis and casually mentions the idea of abolishing private property. “My platform is that each person should have a home,” he stated. He continued, “And I think I’m facing these two options. I don’t think there are hundreds of thousands of people in the system, right? Whether you call it property abolition or a statewide housing guarantee, if there’s a system that can ensure each home, that’s definitely better than what’s going on right now,” he clarified.

It’s interesting to note that housing plays a significant role in Mamdani’s rise, especially given how many New Yorkers feel burdened living in one of the most expensive cities in the nation. He has even advocated for a rent freeze, a proposal that some economists warn could ultimately lead to older rental units and increased rents in the long term.

This video was posted and quickly gained traction on various social media platforms.

Comments from critics have been sharp. One pointed out that, “He claims to be a socialist. Whether he wants to abolish private property or take control of the means of production, these ideas flow directly from Karl Marx’s playbook.” Another echoed the sentiment, stating flatly, “He’s a communist,” with a specific response from Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican.
