Mamdani’s Property Tax Proposal Raises Eyebrows
Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani recently reaffirmed his plan to increase property taxes in what he describes as “a richer, whiter neighborhood.” He also expressed his belief that billionaires should not exist.
Although his proposals focus on wealth rather than race, Mamdani acknowledges that his plan specifically impacts white homeowners. He explained, “It’s just an explanation of what we’re seeing right now. It’s not driven by race. It’s an assessment of areas where taxes are inadequately taxed and excessive taxes.” He shared his thoughts during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Mamdani emphasized that New York City’s property tax system has been unfair for a long time, pointing out that current Mayor Eric Adams pledged to address it within his first 100 days in office.
The candidate, who is seen as a leading Democratic contender for mayor, seemed to downplay the risk of alienating voters by bringing race into the conversation. He insisted he was “just naming things as they are.”
In light of New York City’s dwindling tax base, Mamdani and other socialist advocates expressed concern over the rising cost of living that is prompting residents to leave for neighboring states like New Jersey and Connecticut. He stated, “If we don’t meet at this moment, we will lose the city.” He suggests a plan to implement a 1% tax increase.
Mamdani is aware of the limitations he faces in instigating tax changes without state approval but remains confident that he can frame his proposals as necessary. Intriguingly, he doesn’t shy away from discussing the concept of billionaires, outright stating, “Frankly, I don’t think there’s a billionaire,” even as New York City is home to the most billionaires of any city worldwide.
