New York City Mayoral Candidate Critiques Trump on Immigration
Zoran Mamdani, a democratic candidate for mayor in New York City, took his anti-Trump message to Staten Island on Wednesday, criticizing President Donald Trump’s key immigration policies.
During his campaign stop at a Mediterranean restaurant, Mamdani continued his “Five Boroughs Against Trump” tour. He pointed out that a significant number of residents—about one in four—were born outside the U.S., emphasizing that many in the community speak languages other than English. “This is not just a local issue; it’s a broader problem stemming from the Trump administration,” he stated. “It really isn’t about safety; it’s more about punishing people.”
In contrast to Trump’s previous campaigning last year, where he focused on deporting illegal immigrants, Mamdani’s platform aims to protect immigrant communities in New York City.
At the event, Mamdani was accompanied by Staten Island District leader Jasmine Robinson, immigration rights advocate Yesenia Matas, and Ali Ansari from the Staten Island Democrat Association, as they discussed the detrimental impact of Trump’s policies on local immigrant populations.
Mamdani has criticized the administration as “authoritarian” and expressed concerns over its efforts targeting immigrants. He described the current climate as bearing dark overtones, asserting his commitment to making New York “Trump-proof” by removing ICE from urban facilities and strengthening sanctuary laws.
His campaign echoes the sentiment of the Democratic primary, which has largely focused on resisting Trump’s immigration measures. A recent incident involving a primary candidate illustrates the fierce opposition against Trump’s policies. Bradlander was detained during an attempt to support immigrants at a federal hearing.
Although no charges were pressed against Bradlander, the incident highlighted the ongoing clash between local officials and the federal government over immigration enforcement.
Mamdani notes that New York City has emerged as a focal point for immigration-related tensions, particularly as the Biden administration eased some of the stricter COVID-era policies. Mayor Eric Adams has been vocal about the challenges presented by an influx of new immigrants, even labeling the situation a state of emergency.
As the Democratic primary approaches, Mamdani envisions a city governance model that actively resists Trump’s policies and advocates for vulnerable communities. In doing so, he seeks to present a vision of New York that stands firmly against punitive measures.
In a broader context, Adams has also taken stances against certain federal immigration policies, while his relationship with Trump remains complex, having been both criticized and defended by the former president. With an election looming on November 4th, Mamdani, along with Adams and other candidates, prepares for a pivotal political battle ahead.
