Zohran Mamdani Teams Up With Brad Lander To Oppose Dan Goldman From The Left

Intra-Party Struggles Emerge in NYC Following Mayor-Elect’s Victory

The left wing of the Democratic Party in New York City is intensifying its efforts after Zoran Mamdani’s election as mayor in November.

On Wednesday, City Comptroller Brad Lander, at 56, initiated a movement to unseat Democratic State Representative Dan Goldman, who is 49 and represents parts of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. This conflict occurs in the context of Mamdani’s recent mayoral success. It reflects ongoing ideological clashes within a series of Democratic primaries for securely blue districts.

Lander’s campaign received backing from notable progressives like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Bernie Sanders, along with the Working Families Party. Mamdani also expressed support for Lander, having recognized each other during their shared pursuit of the Democratic mayoral nomination in June.

“Instead of having an enemy in his own backyard, our mayor can have an ally in Washington,” Lander said in a video announcing his campaign.

Mamdani described Lander as a “trusted ally” and expressed pride in how the outgoing comptroller handled congressional matters, according to a report by The New York Times.

Interestingly, Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo by a notable margin in Goldman’s district in June.

Lander’s announcement video highlights his resistance to the Trump administration and its immigration policies. In a recent sit-in protest against the detention of undocumented immigrants, Lander was arrested in September, claiming not guilty to minor charges regarding trespassing and obstructing federal business.

“Brad caught Donald Trump and Elon Musk when they tried to steal $80 million from New York City,” Lander’s launch video notes. “And when ICE began detaining my neighbors, I stood up to them.”

Goldman, who has served two terms, has also been a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s immigration stance.

Support for Israel could become a contentious issue in upcoming primaries, especially in districts with sizable Jewish populations. Goldman has typically taken a more cautious stance on Israel’s actions amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, and he criticized Mamdani’s viewpoints on the issue during the mayoral race. In contrast, Lander has been quite critical of Israel despite both candidates sharing Jewish backgrounds.

While Lander did not mention Goldman directly in his campaign video, he asserted that he would not align himself with pro-Israel organizations if he were to be elected to Congress. Historically, such groups have backed Goldman financially.

Goldman, who previously triumphed over far-left candidates for his seat in 2022, is among Congress’s wealthiest members, being an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune. His substantial resources may help him counter any challenges posed by Lander.

Lander has a lengthy history as a former City Council member serving Brooklyn’s Park Slope area, overlapping with part of Goldman’s district.

Moreover, the neighboring 12th Congressional District is gearing up for a competitive Democratic primary, especially following the retirement announcement from longtime Rep. Jerry Nadler. The region is predominantly blue, encompassing large parts of Manhattan.
