Zohran Mamdani visits Ayat Hinds Hall restaurant during antisemitism debate

New York City Mayor Dines at Controversial Palestinian Restaurant

On Wednesday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited Ayat Hinds Hall, a Palestinian restaurant on the Upper West Side. This particular restaurant has a sister location that drew significant criticism in 2023 for a menu section that was labeled anti-Semitic by some critics.

The contentious menu featured a part labeled “From the River to the Sea,” which the Anti-Defamation League describes as a veiled call for the destruction of Israel. The front page of the menu boldly declares, “Down with the occupation,” in multiple languages, including English, Arabic, and Hebrew. Other phrases like “Resilience,” “Freedom,” and “Save our children” were also prominently displayed. Additionally, the menu included a map identifying the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem, and Israel as Palestine.

This controversy had led some to accuse the restaurant of promoting anti-Jewish sentiments, with critics describing the rhetoric as “openly genocidal.” However, the restaurant’s owner, Abdul Elenani, defended the establishment, explaining that the phrases had actually been on the menu prior to the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.

Elenani, who expressed support for a two-state solution and condemned all violence, previously organized a complimentary Shabbat dinner for a large gathering, as reported by the Times.

Mamdani’s visit to the restaurant coincided with backlash he received from pro-Palestinian protesters during a vigil commemorating the anniversary of the October 7 attacks. The demonstrators voiced their discontent, labeling him a “traitor” and accusing him of complicity in genocidal actions. Some protestors shouted demands for accountability, asking how many lives he was responsible for during the recent conflict.

In the wake of the protests, Mamdani reiterated his past comments, framing Israel’s response in Gaza as a form of genocide and emphasizing the need for widespread empathy. “I believe that there must be room to mourn every single life,” he stated, acknowledging both the casualties from the Hamas attack three years ago and the ongoing loss of Palestinian lives due to the Israeli government’s actions since then.
