Zoran Mamdani Sworn in as New Mayor of New York City

Zoran Mamdani, the new mayor of New York City from the Socialist Party, took his oath of office early Thursday morning. He will officially commence his role as the mayor of the largest city in the U.S. on New Year’s Day.

The oath was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James at midnight. Interestingly, Senator Bernie Sanders is set to re-administer Mamdani’s oath at a public inauguration ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day. Mamdani, who used the Quran for his swearing-in, has made history as the first Muslim mayor of New York City.

Sanders praised Mamdani in a statement, emphasizing that he symbolizes a new wave of progressive leadership grounded in courage and unity, especially at a time when democracy is perceived to be under threat.

Mamdani’s Inauguration Celebration

Along with Sanders and James, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent supporter, is expected to deliver the opening address during the inauguration. The event is open to “all New Yorkers,” according to Mamdani’s transition team, and will feature a “large inauguration block party” later, set to take place along Broadway’s Canyon of Heroes.

At just 34 years old, Mamdani has been recognized for placing affordability at the center of his policies. He successfully countered criticisms regarding his anti-Israel views and socialist policies, which include proposals like rent freezes and defunding the police.

In his victory speech, Mamdani highlighted the struggle for power among everyday workers, contrasting those who labor, often facing physical tolls, with the wealthy rulers. He declared that they have “overthrown a political dynasty,” suggesting a significant shift in the political landscape of New York.
