Zohran Mamdani wins against Andrew Cuomo in surprising NYC mayoral upset

New York City Mayoral Election: Zoran Mamdani’s Rise and Challenges

The Fox News Decision Desk forecasts that New York City will elect Democratic Rep. Zoran Mamdani as its new mayor. Identifying as a democratic socialist, he triumphed over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a fierce contest that not only targeted the future of the city but also seemed to reflect shifting dynamics within the Democratic Party.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old state representative from Queens with Ugandan heritage, stirred significant political debate in June by announcing his victory in the Democratic primary, which was seen as an upset against Cuomo, who had been favored to win the nomination.

Since his primary win, Mamdani has gained national attention, aligning with progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to engage New York voters on policies aimed at affordability. His campaign promises, such as freezing rent, providing faster and free public transit, establishing city-operated grocery stores, and ensuring free child care, resonate strongly with constituents.

However, his rise hasn’t gone unnoticed by everyone. Notably, even Donald Trump has criticized Mamdani, branding him a “100% communist lunatic” and “my little communist,” terms that Mamdani disputes. As Election Day approached, Trump endorsed Cuomo, warning of federal funding cuts should Mamdani prevail.

Cuomo Gains Momentum in Final Days

As the election nears, it appears Cuomo has gained ground against Mamdani, narrowing the latter’s lead significantly.

In the weeks leading to the election, Mamdani vowed to utilize his position and the judicial system to combat Trump’s threats. “Donald Trump may speak as if it’s his decision, but this is money our city deserves,” he stated recently.

Mamdani’s campaign is shedding light on fractures within the Democratic Party, which has faced setbacks in recent elections. The fallout from Cuomo’s 2021 resignation—following allegations of sexual harassment—continues to reverberate. After losing the Democratic primary, he is now running as an independent against Mamdani, accusing him of being more aligned with socialism than mainstream Democratic values.

Cuomo commented, “There’s a quiet civil war within the Democratic Party. There’s the far left, wanting to embrace radical ideas, and then there are mainstream moderate Democrats.” Interestingly, he now identifies himself as moderate, a change from his previous liberal label, suggesting a shift in the party’s dynamics.

The New York Democratic Party has been hesitant to fully back Mamdani, even after he secured the nomination. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer refrained from endorsing him, despite expressing a positive relationship. This hesitance followed a protest Mamdani led in 2023 regarding the Gaza conflict, which had attracted significant media attention.

Despite the lukewarm support, Gov. Kathy Hochul endorsed Mamdani’s campaign in September and actively participated in his movements. However, Mamdani has shown some reluctance to support Hochul’s incumbency, a factor that could play into his plans to increase taxes on corporations and the wealthiest New Yorkers to fund his ambitious proposals. But Hochul has maintained that she won’t raise taxes, leading to tension among Mamdani’s supporters.

Mamdani’s candidacy has sparked conversations within the Jewish community, where some prominent rabbis across the country, noting concerns over discrimination, have publicly declared their opposition to his views on Israel. His rhetoric, including calling the Gaza war a “genocide,” has intensified scrutiny, a hot button issue among Jewish voters in New York.

As Election Day approaches, Mamdani, who is set to become the first South Asian and Muslim mayor if he wins, has focused heavily on building a strong online presence. His campaign effectively leveraged social media, drawing in younger, less politically engaged voters. With an approach that mirrors influencers more than traditional politicians, Mamdani’s videos resonate widely, showcasing celebrity endorsements and striking visual content.

In a telling moment, Mamdani mentioned meeting a supporter wearing a “MAGA for Zoran” hat—an interesting nod to Trump’s slogan that suggests a shared concern among voters across the political spectrum: “No matter who you are or where you live, we all feel this crisis,” he remarked.
