Mamdani’s First City Hall Press Conference

In an interesting turn of events, Mayor Zoran Mamdani held a press conference on Wednesday that felt quite different from the usual City Hall affair. This was his first time taking questions, and the atmosphere was more like a gathering of social media influencers than a traditional press briefing.

The 34-year-old mayor, known for his lively social media presence, was surrounded by enthusiastic young influencers who admired his style, including those dubbed “eco-rappers” and fitness gurus. It was a scene filled with admiration, perhaps slightly unrealistic, but it gave off a vibe of excitement.

Several influencers began their questions by reminiscing about meeting Mamdani during his campaign. One TikToker, who goes by @laydayallday, was particularly animated, claiming his posts promoting Mamdani reached an impressive 120 million people.

He boasted, “It’s such an honor to do this for you. I do it just by dancing and spreading joy.” It felt like a mutual admiration society rather than a hard-hitting press session.

This event, which his team termed Mamdani’s “first new media press conference,” held in the Blue Room—usually a venue reserved for conventional press—was characterized by his emphasis on a non-traditional approach to appealing to New Yorkers.

Yet, the atmosphere was reminiscent of the self-satisfied briefings given by his predecessor, Eric Adams, who often encountered tough questions. It was a bit jarring, really—where was the usual rigor of journalism?

Mamdani shared a candid recap of the first six days of his administration, citing various initiatives, from future “rental rip-off” hearings to executive orders aimed at tackling pressing issues.

Strikingly, the influencers kept the tone light, steering clear of challenging questions. They shifted focus back to promoting fitness initiatives and suggested that Mamdani take action against “junk fees” at gyms.

Meanwhile, some influencers busied themselves with filming selfie videos around City Hall, seemingly uninterested in more serious inquiries. When approached by reporters, one influencer mentioned, “We don’t talk to the media.”

At one point, Mamdani took a lighthearted jab as he posed for a selfie, struggling with his camera’s settings: “You didn’t choose Zoomers; you chose Millennials,” he joked.
