Critique of New York City’s First Lady’s Fashion Choice

The target of “affordability” seems to have missed the mark.

Rama Duwaj, the first lady of New York City, turned heads when she chose to wear $630 “artisan” leather boots from a luxury designer at her husband Zoran Mamdani’s swearing-in ceremony. Critics were quick to point out that this extravagant outfit contradicted her purported “everyday” persona.

Duwaj, aged 28, gained attention as a socialite rather than strictly a socialist, especially on New Year’s Day. Her boots, crafted from “vegetable-tanned cowhide,” come with “super-cushioned memory foam insoles,” showcasing Mista’s luxurious style.

This designer brand, known for its high price tags, offers these so-called “Sherry boots” which have a 6cm heel and lace-up detailing at the back. Observers questioned whether her fashion statement was appropriate, especially given Mamdani’s policies that include imposing higher taxes on the wealthy.

One social media user remarked, “Mr. Mamdani’s ‘affordability policy’ is a scam. How can he promote affordable living while his wife flaunts $600 boots?” Another chimed in, noting how Mamdani’s background of meeting Duwaj on a dating app created a stark contrast with his portrayal of being in touch with everyday New Yorkers.

Another critic humorously pointed out, “They cost $600. But if he really took control of production, everyone could buy them.”

Notably, Duwaj attended the ceremony dressed in a black coat and skirt, paired with sparkling earrings, while holding a centuries-old Quran that Mamdani placed his hands upon during the oath.

Interestingly, during Mamdani’s victory speech in November, Duwaj sported a dark denim top designed by Palestinian-Jordanian designer Zaid Hijazi along with luxury earrings crafted by New York jeweler Eddie Borgo, some of which are priced at over $46,000 per pair.

As of Thursday, Duwaj had not responded to inquiries regarding whether those eye-catching boots were hers. Also, the design company Mista, which prides itself on being a collective of artisans from Spain and Portugal, did not comment on whether the boots were indeed one of their creations.
